The much speculated arrival of promoted trends on Twitter has now arrived. The test subject: Toy Story 3 is said to have been ‘sold’ for thousands of dollars.

Each promoted trend is seen in the trending topic area to the right and is part of Twitter’s promoted tweets.

But is it right to start charging? Will this be the end of ‘free’ trending as we know it?
